How to Avoid Car Accidents: 7 Safety Tips

how to avoid car accidents

In 2019 there were over 36,000 deaths on the road in the US.

Many were caused by driver error because the driver was distracted, driving too fast, or not paying attention to the traffic.

Don’t become a statistic. Learn how to be a safe driver and reduce your risk on the road.

Read our driving tips on how to avoid car accidents by making yourself a better driver.

1. Keep Your Distance

People’s biggest mistake whilst driving is not leaving enough of a stopping distance between themselves and the car in front.

Make sure there are at least three seconds of space between you and the other car. Tailgating is the top cause of auto accidents.

2. Pull Out Slowly

When pulling into a new street at an intersection or a stop sign, makes sure you double-check the street is clear. Look both ways, twice so that you can see anybody speeding down the road before you begin to exit your street.

Being cautious and drive safely. It can save lives as fast-moving vehicles can appear as if out of nowhere. Give yourself an extra chance to spot them.

3. Look Ahead

When you drive along a street or highway, you should always be looking ahead further down the route. Ideally, you should be looking at where you will be in 12 seconds.

This will give you plenty of warning about any sudden changes in traffic activity. This will allow you to stop or avoid any potential accidents in time.

4. Hands On The Wheel

At an absolute minimum, you should have one hand on the wheel at all times. Try and reduce the number of distractions that may force you to take your attention and your hands away from the wheel.

Get a passenger to change the radio station, switch off your cell phone whilst driving and wait to eat and drink until you are stationary again.

5. Look Behind You

If you are backing out of a driveway or parking spot, you need to make sure you are physically looking behind you. Do not just rely on your mirrors as they create numerous blind spots.

Fender benders or slow-moving accidents are most commonly caused by people not looking when pulling out of a spot.

6. Slow Down

Speed kills. Every 1% increase in your speed increases your chance of any accident you are involved in being fatal by 3-4%. This number increases sharply for any pedestrians should you be involved in a collision with somebody on the street.

The risk of death is not worth the small amount of time you will save by driving faster to your destination. Slow down and enjoy the ride instead.

7. Keep Your Car Well Maintained

If a mechanic has not serviced your car in a while, it could be hiding problems that could cause accidents when out on the road.

Make sure you are booked in for an annual service and regular oil and brake checks to keep avoiding car accidents when driving.
